Some VPN providers may claim that surfing the Internet using a VPN will boost Internet connection speeds, or even assert that they help with ISP throttling.
Nevertheless, at BolehVPN we like to be completely honest and transparent with our Bolehians who ask the question:
“Does a VPN slow down Internet connection?”
While we cannot answer for certain if using a VPN will or will not slow down your Internet speeds, we would like to share with you a couple of factors which do come into account to your connection while on VPN.
1) OVERALL INTERNET SPEED
The speed of your Internet when connected to a VPN still depends largely on the overall speed of your Internet connection.
If the Internet connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is already slow to begin with, you will not see any tremendous difference surfing with or without a VPN.
However, you can always check your Internet speeds here to test for yourself if your VPN is helping with your Internet connection.
2) SERVER LOCATION
This is the time you would be thankful for when your VPN provider has plenty of servers to choose from. The closer you are to your server you connect to, the faster your Internet speed because it will take less time for a data packet to travel between your connection.
So if you were connecting from Malaysia, you can bet on a faster Internet speed if you were to connect to a server in a country closer in distance like Singapore, rather than a server in Germany.
You can always check by conducting a ping test on the different servers. Ping determines the delay (latency) in connection between two computers over a network. The smaller the ping number, means a faster more responsive connection.
3) VPN PROTOCOLS
There are various types of VPN protocols which also represent the level of encryption in your connection. (BolehVPN offers OpenVPN and L2TP protocols).
Your Internet speed is affected by the level of security you decide to choose, but there is however a trade-off between one and the other.
If you connect to a configuration with higher encryption such as 256-bit encryption because you would like higher security, you can expect that you will experience decreased speeds. A configuration with lower encryption such as a 128-bit encryption may be less secure, but your speed will be faster, suitable if you were using your VPN for streaming and torrenting.
BolehVPN's servers & configuration options
Overall, you probably would not see such a drastic change in Internet connection speeds when using a VPN. The overall speed of your VPN still depends on your existing Internet connection speed. So as long as that is stable, any slow downs will only be a small fraction which may not even be noticeable.
